Over the past few years, by listening to the children of Eurécole and their parents, the teaching team has noticed that our students were in contact with the Internet at an increasingly early age through computers, tablets and smartphones. We also noticed that they often shared the same games and applications but did not see the dangers that could be linked to their practices.
Even if lessons on prevention have been organized in cycle 3 (Google search, verification of information, initiation to image), it is clear that new practices should correspond to a revisited prevention.
Parents and teachers are often powerless and especially unaware of the dangers to which their children could be exposed.
We have therefore asked an external expert who is used to working with children and who is familiar with social networks and Internet use to design a module for our students but also for their parents.
The goal of this intervention is to make children aware of the dangers of the Internet. Just like when crossing a road, we explain to them that they have to be cautious.
THE DANGERS OF THE INTERNET AND ONLINE GAMES/APPLICATIONS
The module starts with an inventory of the children’s practices, what they play, what applications they use, are they supervised by an adult, etc…?
The contact is based on a survey: screen time, equipment per household (numbers, types, location)
This allows for the use of the following skills: tools: drawing, graphing, diagramming, justifying and validating information, participating in an oral debate.
presentation of results
=> Debate what do you think are the dangers of the applications?
Through this debate, we try to create a good practice program that comes from the child and that is done together so that it can be taken back to the classroom with the teachers.
In the real world, your parents don’t give you permission to go anywhere to protect you. On the internet it’s the same.
The dangers according to the children
Why do we spend more and more time on screens (the child, the adult?)
Age limit: why? (Signage for games, movies, shows)
The youtubers / The Fake News
Advertising: constant repetition that leads to a need that we don’t necessarily have.
Reality versus the reality presented by social networks (the virtual, distortion of reality that can create jealousy)
Addiction (games, social networks) and therefore isolation, loss of friends
Harassment: (the impunity that the internet allows): If you are a victim of harassment on the internet, immediately tell an adult
What would be the good practices?
I don’t post any personal information I protect my digital identity and that of others (I don’t post anything about my friends either)
I don’t accept friendships with people I don’t know or recognize!
I do not post pictures of myself or my friends (image rights)
I NEVER accept a date from a person I met on the internet and I do not chat with a stranger
If I come across any content that offends me, I must tell my parents or an adult
A debate is also organized based on questions: what did you see that scared you (film, cartoons, images)
Take care of them: practice a sport, eat well, sleep well, do not come into contact with images that can disturb them (nightmares), limit screen time.
