Eurécole middle school students enjoyed an exceptional educational trip to Sicily, an island where ancient history, majestic landscapes and diverse cultural heritage come together. Over several days, they explored emblematic sites and discovered the legacy of the many civilizations—Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Arabs and Aragonese—whose influences remain deeply rooted in the Sicilian landscape.
At the Foot of Mount Etna: Sicily’s Volcanic Soul
The journey began at the base of Mount Etna, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes. Students observed landscapes shaped by successive eruptions and learned how this natural giant has influenced the island’s history, economy and daily life.
Taormina: Between Sea and Antiquity
The next stop was Taormina, perched high above the Ionian Sea. Its remarkably well-preserved ancient theatre offered students a true immersion into Greco-Roman history. Facing a breathtaking panoramic view, they imagined the performances of the past and discovered the central role these venues once played in cultural life.
Syracuse: A Blend of Ancient Grandeur and Natural Beauty
The trip continued in Syracuse, one of the most prestigious cities of the ancient Greek world. At the Neapolis archaeological park, students explored the amphitheatre, monumental remains and the ancient quarries that supplied the stone used to construct the city’s majestic buildings.
Ortigia: A Jewel at the Heart of Syracuse
The exploration extended to the island of Ortigia, the historic heart of Syracuse. Students wandered through its picturesque alleys, admired its baroque façades, bright piazzas and ancient remains. With its Mediterranean charm and millennia-old heritage, Ortigia quickly captivated the group, offering a warm atmosphere and an open-air history lesson.
Catania :
The streets of Catania are filled with history for those who know where to look. Thanks to their expert guide, students discovered both the grand and everyday aspects of Roman life through visits to the public baths, the ruins of one of the largest amphitheatres of ancient Rome and the Aragonese Castle, remarkably spared by an enormous lava flow.
An Enriching and Unifying Experience
Beyond the cultural visits, this journey was a powerful human experience. Students shared moments of teamwork, curiosity and wonder that will remain memorable. They returned with deeper knowledge, enriched curiosity and precious memories, ready to continue the school year with enthusiasm.
