Eurécole Annual CM1 Project: Ocean Conservation

This year, Eurécole’s CM1 students, in Isabelle and Valérie’s classes, are actively taking part in a project dedicated to ocean conservation. Our students explore major themes such as overfishing, plastic pollution, and the preservation of marine biodiversity.

Participation in the educational program “L’Océan à l’École

As part of the educational kit “L’Océan à l’École”, developed by the association Water Family – Du Flocon à la Vague, students follow the adventure of Chloé and Matthieu Witvoet, ambassadors for the marine cause. This program raises awareness among children, the public, and schools about water-related and environmental issues.

Thanks to this kit, students gain a concrete understanding of ocean-related challenges while developing their critical thinking skills and sense of civic engagement.

Swim For Change: a sporting and educational challenge

Chloé and Matthieu take on an extraordinary challenge: swimming across the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Verde to Guadeloupe, a distance of approximately 3,800 km, in 6-hour relay shifts each day. On board their boat, Papagayo, crew members and experts support the crossing, which follows strict ecological principles: the boat drifts without using its engine.

For CM1 students, this challenge has become a powerful educational tool. They follow the adventure live, ask the swimmers questions, and exchange with them during interactive sessions.

This unique experience has allowed students to feel involved and to better understand the role each individual can play in protecting the oceans.

During the crossing, a technical failure on the boat forced Chloé and Matthieu to completely stop swimming. After 26 days at sea, they finally arrived in Guadeloupe.

Once there, a team of experts took charge of the boat to carry out the necessary repairs. A major sorting process then took place to prepare for the return crossing, deciding what would remain on board and what could be left, sold, or donated in Guadeloupe.
From the Antilles, Chloé and Matthieu continue their mission by sharing their work in local schools, their marine observations, and the highlights of this adventure.

An inspiring and educational project

This project reflects Eurécole’s philosophy of civic engagement and openness to the world. By following this crossing and taking part in the educational program, CM1 students develop their curiosity, sense of responsibility, and teamwork skills while becoming more aware of the importance of protecting our planet.

And this is only the beginning: the project continues throughout the year… stay tuned! ⛵
