Science in English at Eurécole – A Look Back at the 2024–2025 School Year

Experimenting, discovering, understanding… in English!

At Eurécole, bilingual school with an immersive and personalized teaching approach, science education is an integral part of the English curriculum. Our teaching approach supports the development of scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and curiosity in the primary grades, while strengthening the four key language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Science lessons start in CP and continue through CM2. Our science programme is designed to foster understanding and skills through observation, investigation and inquiry. It gradually builds from simple concepts in early years to more complex ideas as students’ progress. Children love engaging in hands-on and interactive lessons. A positive science experience is essential to nurturing a lifelong love of discovery and exploration of the world around us.

Since the start of the school year, students from CP to CM2 have discovered different science concepts and conducted numerous science experiments, combining sensory exploration, practical activities, and the observation of living things.

Below is a photo overview showcasing some of the topics explored and activities undertaken:

CP

🔬 Discovering germs and how they spread:  Learning how to avoid them through good hygiene practices.
🔬 Learning about our teeth and how to care for them:   Looking at the difference between human and animal teeth!
🔬 Animals and their habitats:  Students learned to categorize animals by their living environments. They also reflected on the questions: “Would you rather live above or below ground? What animals hibernate? What animals are nocturnal and why?
🔬 Archaeology session:  Young explorers participated in a digging activity and discovered the work of archaeologists.

CE1

🔬 Magic beans:  Students planted bean seeds and followed their development over several weeks.
🔬 Plants and photosynthesis:  Planting daffodil bulbs and observing their growth. Learning how plants make their own food.
🔬 Deciduous and Evergreen trees:  Categorizing, drawing and observing different tree species. Understanding the importance of photosynthesis and the production of oxygen.

CE2

🔬 Hygiene and the growth of bacteria:  observing the effects of unwashed hands, washed hands (with and without soap) on bread.
🔬 The human body:  Studying the three different systems – organs, muscles, and skeletal.
🔬 Bendy bones:  Observing the effects of vinegar on chicken bones to understand the importance of calcium and Vitamin D for bone strength. The bones became flexible like rubber and almost impossible to break.
🔬 Taste buds:  Exploring the four flavours – sweet, salty, sour, bitter – through a tasting experiment.

CM1

🔬 Discovering the properties of Matter:  Making butter by separating a liquid and a solid by shaking.
🔬 Production of a gas:  Inflating a balloon with a chemical reaction using vinegar and baking soda.
🔬 Creating a rainbow:  Experiment using the capillary action of water and the combination of primary colours.
🔬 Wind energy:  Designing and decorating mini wind turbines to see how wind power works.
🔬 How does sound travel:  Testing sound transmission with a string telephone and musical spoons.
🔬 Which shape is the strongest:  Discovering which architectural form is strongest – triangle, square, or round columns?
🔬 Paperclip chains without hands:  A fun challenge using mechanical action to create a chain.
🔬 Creating a vacuum:  Exploring how the removal of air affects objects.

CM2

🔬 Algae and their impact on water environments:  Observing algae growth and testing techniques to reduce it.
🔬 The digestive system:  Understanding the journey of food through the body through theory and hands-on experiments
